Background to LARC
LARC, the Local Authority Research Consortium, was formed in early 2007, with a purpose to:
- enable Children's Services teams to identify where they are (individually and collectively) progressing with integrated working at a locality level
- help authorities identify how to make faster progress on improving outcomes for children, young people and families
- report findings and recommendations nationally.
LARC comprises:
- between 14 to 23 English local authorities
- National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER)
- Research in Practice (RiP)
- Local Government Group
- CWDC
LARC adopts an innovative, pragmatic, best available evidence approach to investigating early intervention. Each year, LARC members agree priorities and own and deliver their research project. Each member LA defines and carries out its own investigation tailored to their local circumstances within the supporting structure of a national project and supported by NFER researchers. This approach has been developed over recent years and is proving an effective way of bringing together the knowledge and expertise of front line managers, strategic managers, local research staff and national agencies. All partners share a common purpose of using the research to improve service planning and make a difference to the lives of children, young people and families.
