Julie works on a range of research projects including the development of English assessment tasks for pupils in primary and secondary education, an evaluation of literacy initiatives in Ireland and an international survey of adult skills. Other projects have involved the development of assessment materials for adult literacy and ESOL learners in the UK, an evaluation of a maths initiative for pupils in key stage 3 and an investigation into language and gender differences in children’s written narratives at key stage 2.
Prior to joining NFER, Julie worked as a lecturer and Head of Centre in a Further Education college. She introduced A level English language to the college and was responsible for several A level courses. This role included the internal moderation of all A level English coursework (literature and language). She has also taught adults and worked with pre-school children. Julie is currently the National Programme Manager for the international Survey of Adult Skills in England (part of the PIAAC international survey).
